A Note from our Pastor
Dear Friends,
I would like to share with you a new adult fellowship
program we will be offering this summer.
Starting in May, I will be leading a monthly discussion on the topic of
forgiveness, using the award winning documentary, The
Power of Forgiveness.
We will meet on Tuesday, May 27, and
June 24 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. We will have a
potluck dinner followed by discussion.
The Power of Forgiveness explores this important work and translates it into a
popular, accessible documentary film for public television. The focus is on the
emergent understanding of contemporary clinical and academic research that
shows forgiveness is validated as having real potential for personal and
spiritual transformation. At the same time the film points to the centrality of
forgiveness as a virtue in many of the world’s great religions and the struggle
that people of all faiths have in honoring it.
Forgiveness is one of the toughest things we will ever
do, and yet is a cornerstone of the Christian faith. In the Gospel of Matthew, Peter asks how many
times should he forgive, and suggests that seven should be a sufficient
number. Jesus responds by telling him to
multiply that seven – suggesting that there is no end to forgiveness. Jesus teaches his disciples to pray saying forgive us our debts as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
Over the next three months we will explore the various
facets of this important spiritual discipline – forgiving ourselves, forgiving
others and how our faith is tied to this practice.
No reservations are required, only a covered dish to
share and your participation. Friends
and neighbors are welcome. Childcare will be available.
In Christ, Shelly White Wood

Director of Children’s Ministries - Search Underway
CHCPC is now conducting a search
for a person to work part-time heading up the programs serving children through
the fifth grade. The position
description was approved by the Personnel Committee on April 23, and the Search
Committee (Kim Abbas, Ken Brown, Barb Dowd, Wendy Henderson andClair Brooks)
is now recruiting applicants. If you
know of persons who are, or may be, interested in becoming candidates, please
encourage them to contact any member of the Search Committee or the church
office (268-0153) for more information.
Presbytery Office Volunteer - Are you One? Join the Fun!
The North Central Iowa Presbytery Office is
seeking a few additional people who would enjoy helping with various projects
in the Presbytery Office. The time frame
varies from an hour to a half day. The
tasks vary from telephone answering, mailings, newsletter preparation, filing,
and various meeting preparations.
Example: For several years CHCPC
has been our Contact newsletter volunteer location. We are now asking for some additional
help. As is occasionally the case, some
of our very helpful volunteers are no longer able to participate. We usually have about 8-10 persons to prepare
over 4,000 newsletter pieces in a 2-3 hour time period. We label, collate and prepare the Contact four
times a year. It is a 2-3 hour volunteer
event with much fellowship and laughter.
Contact the Presbytery office at
vthordsen@presbynciowa.org or 233-1747.
We will look forward to your participation.
Thank you for your assistance, Vicki
Music Notes
Sue Feltman, Director of
Worship & Music
The summer schedule is one month away, and it’s time to
think about special music during the summer months. Would you be interested in singing
in a small group? Singing a solo? Playing
your instrument with others? Playing a
solo? If so, or if you simply wish more
information about these opportunities, please leave me a note at the church
office, or send me an email at suefeltman@cfu.net. We have 14 Sundays to fill so there are
plenty of opportunities for everyone!
Your Worship Bandwill be participating in the annual Praise Fest on Sunday, May 18 at 4:00
pm. The church with the most supporters
(attendees) will receive $300 to put toward a charity organization of their
choice. The event will be held on the
grounds ofSt. Paul
Lutheran Church,
right in our neighborhood! If raining,
it will be moved toCedar
Heights Elementary
School.
Bring your lawn chair and enjoy some Christian contemporary music. (and support your worship band!)
Is there interest
in participating in a church
orchestra/band?
If so, please sign the list on my door.
I need to know which instrument you play, and how many years you’ve
played it! We can find music for all
levels, so sign up!
Organ Committee update: Your
organ committee has met with representatives from the Allen Organ company and
will be traveling to hear several different organs. We are also planning to meet with
representatives of Rodgers Organs. We
hope to have more information for you in the summer.
